The simple answer is YES but that doesn’t mean you no longer need to read this post haha!
I was sat watching the England vs Denmark game and I was watching how quick these footballers were on their feet and the skills that are involved and it reminded me so much of a dance. But it also got me thinking about how much dance could really improve their footballing ability.
Don’t get me wrong, I can understand how a footballer may laugh if I was to suggest dancing as a way to enhance their ability on the pitch but let me tell you why I think they should all be signing up to dance classes asap.
If you didn’t know already, dancing can improve so many physical benefits such as flexibility, endurance, and balance, it’s not just two stepping to the left and right to your favourite tracks.
These are all skills and qualities that a good footballer needs!! Without endurance they would struggle to play a whole game. Flexibility allows them to avoid tackling but also the more flexible they are, the less chances for injuries. Flexibility also creates efficiency which will help footballers who have to stay quick on their toes, whilst being able to kick hard and fast and staying under full control. And similarly, balance will also help them keep control, especially when they are leaping into the air for a header, this will all ultimately enhance their agility.
But not only is it good in terms of improving their physical ability, I also cannot forget to mention focus. Without being able to mentally focus, there would be no game, no wins, no football.. dance teaches you how to focus and to stay disciplined.
In class, I get my dancers to sit still and listen to the music with their eyes shut. This is to get them to FOCUS on their exact movements and to run through the flow in their head so they can visualise themselves dancing, and how they want it to look so then they can apply it to the dance floor. As a footballer, this could benefit them massively, as this will allow them to focus on their next move without all the extra distractions and to stay in the moment and not lose their flow. The more focus they will have, the more composure and confidence they will display on the pitch.
Experts are always talking rhythm of the game but if they master the rhythm of dance they will ultimately be able to apply it to their sport.
Even if you are the greatest footballer, you need to stay challenged and work on your skills and dance is the PERFECT way to do this.
Sounds crazy I know, but don’t knock it until you try it!!
