My name is Freya and I’ve been attending these classes for 4+ years and can honestly say they are incredible and have changed my life. You may ask, how can a dance class change your life?
My first dance class with The Army DC was in October 2018 and I was an A-Level student. At the time I was dancing in school and taking classes in mostly classical styles like contemporary and jazz. I remember stumbling across The Army DC on Instagram and saw they had a heels workshop coming up. I decided to take the leap and just book it and try something new. I didn’t know at that moment my life would change forever.
I remember counting down the days till the workshop feeling excited, planning my outfit but also feeling incredibly nervous. From the videos everyone looked so amazing and I was worried people would look at me funny or that I would mess up or that I wasn’t good enough to be there. From the moment I walked in the room I realised I had nothing to worry about. Everyone was so welcoming and came and introduced themselves to me and we started off with a quick name game to help me get to know everyone. Little did I know that the people in this room would soon become my family.
We then started some struts across the room and everyone seemed so confident and sassy. I didn’t really know what to do so I just followed along with everyone else and people started cheering me on. I started to feel super comfortable and believe in myself more. We got then into the class and I was scared for the choreography as I didn’t want to mess up or look silly. Beckie broke down the choreography really well and lots of people were asking questions which helped me to pick up the moves faster. At the end of the class we split into smaller groups to perform. Before we did Beckie spoke to the class and gave an incredible talk about owning your insecurities and self-love. I walked out of that class feeling on top of the world and so fearless. I went home and tried to explain what I had just experienced but I couldn’t really find the words to describe how I was feeling. I just felt so free and happy. Check out my first ever video here.
I quickly signed up to classes and four years later I can say I have found my home. I have made life-long friends, I am confident and fearless, I have improved so much and I have had so many opportunities including performing in the annual show and am now preparing to perform at MOVE IT! I am now such a difference dancer, check out a video of me now here.
I am so glad I took that first step in coming to class and have not regretted one moment of it. I strongly strongly suggest trying out classes for this week! I am so excited to meet every one of you.
