Everyone will come across choreography that they don’t like or that they ‘can’t get’ at some point. I have heard every excuse under the sun when it comes to hating choreo. Like ‘my head just wasn’t in it’ or ‘its just not my day today’.. we have all said this at some point! But, there is always more of a reason to it than that.. don’t think I don’t notice!
Hating choreography is the same as going to work when you don’t want to, or when someone buys you a present and you pretend to like it (we all do this!) or when you have to wash the dishes but you know you have way more exciting places to be. You still do all these things perfectly fine..so why can’t you do this?
This is where I’m going to help you get out of this mindset of hating choreography or having a ‘favourite’ style. So here are some of my DO’s and DONT’s to keep your head in the game at all times!
DO’S

  • Visualise someone that inspires you before class
  • Think of the people at the top and what it took for them to get there
  • Visualise yourself doing it the best you can
  • Remember that the biggest change comes from the biggest challenges
  • Walk in the door with a positive mindset
  • Leave your sh*t at the door and don’t think about anything else
  • Remember training is for YOU and no one else
  • Remember you have the right to make mistakes and it is part of the learning curve

DONT’S

  • Don’t blame anyone else/anything else but yourself
  • Don’t cop an injury
  • Don’t be negative
  • Don’t take it out on the style of dance which might not be your favourite
  • Don’t natter to hide the fact you’re out of your comfort zone
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions
  • Don’t put yourself under so much pressure
  • Don’t have too much pride

If you want to improve faster and more productively, you have to just get on with it and give it 110% in class at all times. Take note of all of my tips above.. I promise you, you will thank me for this later!
