You know, it ok NOT to be amazing at every dance style, right?
But did you also know how extremely important and insanely useful it is to train in them ALL, which will help you to improve the one that you are “best at”…
Sometimes it’s good to be pushed outside your comfort zone, and 99% of the worlds best dancers do exactly this. People worry way too often that they will be the “worst in the room” at a particular style, so they avoid the class completely?! What?! No… Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand how daunting going to a class that isn’t your preferred style, can be – but honestly, with that mindset, you’ll never improve.. in your dancing, in your confidence or in yourself. What if I said, ANY class can help benefit you, whether it’s technique, performance, training or fitness, no class is a waste of time! – but ONLY if you come with the right mindset.
“But I just worry so much about other dancers judging me or me making an absolute fool of myself!!”
… Sound familiar?
I see people putting off class for months and months because they feel like they aren’t the “best” and automatically feel like hopeless (well what the hell, you might think one person is the best whilst another person doesn’t… that’s personal preference at the end of the day) but in reality, I myself, hand on my heart, have been there and you’ve got to start somewhere right? I learnt the hard way.
I went to the most intense, intimidating, fast-paced, not-so-friendly class not so long ago.. which in all honesty showed me EVERY emotion I would never want anyone to feel like that in my classes. I just won’t let it happen. Without going into detail, let’s just say The Army DC is created to improve HARD WORKING INDIVIDUALS… NOT “the world’s best dancers of all time”… no! Whilst improvement is important, yes, your emotions mean more to me. Learning different styles and feeling a littleeeeee out of your depth when dancing in class is what will help you improve 10-fold. Class is just class remember? We’re all there for the same thing so please please give yourself a break and try something new for you… Who cares what anyone thinks?! Our lot will have you freestyling like a nutter before you even knew you had it in you!!… it happens a lot lol. We really are so lucky with our members here.
It is important for me, not to be the best in the room.
How are you gunna push yourself otherwise? We’re human, that’s just how we work! Why would you want to pay to go to class where you’re the star of the show every time? Your attitude will change and you’ll never improve?! Attending different classes that aren’t your style are actually so inspiring, and being able to watch how the style is done by someone else properly and taking note of other dancers strengths is what will help you to improve you…trust me.
So, next time when someone tells you which style a class is, and your walls go up, your head goes down and you turn a corner thinking “mmm yeah this isn’t for me” – change your mind. Definitely GO to class, take note, be inspired, stay open-minded and THEN you can make judgement ;). If technique isn’t your strong suit then push harder on that. We have a workshop on the 9th July with Taylor designed to SPECIFICALLY WORK ON THIS. Click here to book TAYLOR’S TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP.
Dance is a learning process which continues… FOREVER. I’m a teacher, but do I stop learning? Never! I’m challenged & inspired by other dancers and other styles DAILY. Without this, I wouldn’t be where I am now. So think about that before you say no. Look at it as an opportunity to grow your ability and knowledge as a dancer and test YOURSELF.
If you want to improve – step up to the challenge and take full advantage of learning different styles. I promise you will thank me later. You can trial any of our classes now for just £1. YES. £1. Click on the class you want to try on our schedule here and use the discount code ‘ONEPOUNDTRIAL’.
Something to try that will be new to everyone is our upcoming Bollywood Commercial Fusion Workshop on Sunday 29th July. To book on just click here: NAV X AARON BOLLYWOOD FUSION WORKSHOP
