What is it about THE ARMY DC?

Ok so… Do you ever get home from work, sit on the sofa and struggle to switch off? Do you find yourself trying to stop working but catch yourself reaching for your laptop when ‘relaxing’ in front of the TV? Do you ever wish you could find a way to escape and block out the thought of work, relationships or any other problems bothering you from your mind for just one hour? Welcome to THE ARMY DC.
There are a number of reasons why I decided to start dance classes, not is dance my worlds’ biggest passion but after being out of the industry for a few years, working on the fitness and mindset stuff, it taught me a lot and realised actually what was wrong with the industry, and why I stopped dancing way back then…
There was a HUGE lack of mixing people of different ages, who are from different backgrounds and make them all feel EQUAL. Sounds simple, but trust me, in a lot of cases this is completely unheard of.
In my class, it DOES NOT matter where you’re from, how old you are, how experienced you are, my goal is to make everyone feel a part of the unique and extremely supportive, mad but loving family we have created. So what is it about THE ARMY DC? The respect and the support all the dancers have for each other is honestly indescribable and is what makes being a part of The Army Dance Company so special. Here are a couple of words my dancers use to describe our dance classes:

  1. Good vibes –

We are allll about the positive vibes, alwaysss. In my classes, (as if I haven’t said this enough already), every single person is encouragED to be encouragING and genuinely supportive of one-another. You smash it? We scream for you. You mess up? We’ll still be screaming for you! You get stuck? We’ll ALL help you! It doesn’t matter if you mess up the routine a little… The way you feel once leaving class means so much more than that. Everyone is ALWAYS laughing in class, when people leave my classes with the biggest smile on their faces it reminds me daily why I do what I do for my dancers.

  2. Family –

The Army DC is like one huge, crazy family – another reason why the atmosphere is so motivating. It doesn’t matter if you have been to class from the beginning or if it’s your first class ever, we make sure to welcome everyone with open arms and make every single person feel like a part of The Army DC family from the minute they step in to the studio.

  3. Personal growth –

Personal growth is super important. I am very passionate about mindfulness, self-confidence and self-love as well as just the dancing, and I believe growing as an individual as well as a dancer is vital. There’s no better gift than feeling good about yourself, and this is what THE ARMY DC is all about.

  4. Express yourself –

Being able to express yourself is a great thing. A lot of my classes are focused on how the particular piece of music makes YOU feel as an individual. I always tell my dancers that whatever they have going on at work, home, with friends etc… whatever it may be, to leave the bad outside of the studio, but use the raw emotion to put into your performance and imagine the story you are telling with the choreography you’re working with. Expressing feelings while dancing is the difference between a dancer and an artist. The best place to express yourself is our contemporary class check out a video of one here.

  5. Opportunities –

The Army Dance Company has been offered a number of different opportunities in the last couple of months. And as much as I LOVE teaching my classes weekly, it is so nice to be able to offer my dancers different jobs and performances to showcase their hard work including music videos, professional performances, private events, festivals etc. It gives us something to fuel our fire for on a continuous basis so our dancers always stay motivated, inspired and hungry to improve.

If you’ve read the whole way through this, you’re probably the person who’s a little nervous, worried people are going to be looking at you, fear that you’re going to make a fool of yourself afraid of meeting new people, intimidated by the craziness in our videos… Let me tell you, that’s totally normal and TRUST me you’re not alone. I’d say 99% of our students said they’d felt like this before joining and now they just can’t get enough! So, what I’m saying is, ask one of our dancers to make sure I’m not over-exaggerating, try out a class this week and you can see for yourself. We’re all in it for each other and everyone will be right behind you from the start I promise.
